Save money, look for discounted movie theater tickets

As movie ticket prices soar, a favorite cinema pastime for many is becoming a rare occasion, but there are still many ways that canny consumers can enjoy a movie.

Do your research. Call the local theater’s recorded information, log on to the theater’s website, and check out their ads in the newspapers. Theaters may offer discount nights in the middle of the week or during the day. The weekend, when most folks go to the movies, will always be the most expensive showings. On discount nights there should probably be fewer crowds, less noise, and more room to spread out.

Find out if you qualify for a discount card: students, members of the military, and seniors, among others, sometimes do.

Some theaters specialize in showing movies during their second or third run. Expect deep discounts on tickets.

However, for really big savings, comfortable surroundings, and the intoxicating lure of mounds of fresh popcorn, there is a lot to be said for movie night at home. For families with young children, there is the added advantage of being able to pause the movie for bathroom breaks. Save big on a rental; you can even have a double feature if you like.
